I’m Nobody! Who are you? By Emily Dickinson in Google Classroom

I’m Nobody! Who are you? By Emily Dickinson

I’m Nobody! Who are you? By Emily Dickinson

Introduction: Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) was an American poet who lived a mostly introverted, secluded life, maintaining friendships through written letters. She wrote over 1800 poems in her seclusion, most of which were published after her death. As you read, take notes on the speaker's opinions on personal living and what it takes to be a “somebody.”

I’m Nobody! Who are you?
Are you – Nobody – too?
Then there’s a pair of us!
Don’t tell! they’d advertise – you know!

How dreary – to be – Somebody!
How public – like a Frog –
To tell one’s name – the livelong June –
To an admiring Bog!

Analysis Question

Dickinson is famous for isolating herself from society. In the context of this poem, what does it mean to be alone? Cite evidence from this text, your own experience, and other literature, art, or history in your answer.

Educated Literature Circle - End of the Novel

Literature Circle 3

1. How might Westover’s life been different had she chosen not to leave home and attend college? What risks did she face and what fears did the author have to overcome in order to leave home and pursue her higher education? How did Westover change as a result of her formalized education?

2. Tara has titled her book Educated and much of her education takes place in classrooms, lectures, or other university environments. But not all. What other important moments of “education” were there? What friends, acquaintances, or experiences had the most impact on Tara? What does that imply about what an education is?

3. Over the course of this book, the Westover family deals with a number of accidents: Westover’s brother Tyler falling asleep and driving off the road, Westover’s brother Luke catching on fire, and later, a very serious accident for their father. How did these accidents shape Tara’s experience and relationship with her family?

Skill 4A Daily Video 3/ Freedom of Speech Synthesis Essay in Google Classroom

Skill 4A Daily Video 3/ Freedom of Speech Synthesis Essay

First, watch the video. Then, write the essay.

The right to free speech in the United States is guaranteed by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution. The concept of free speech may appear simple on its face, but hate speech complicates it. While some argue that the ability to voice any opinion under any circumstances is a fundamental right in America, others believe that hate speech — defined as “abusive or threatening speech or writing that expresses prejudice against a particular group, especially on the basis of race, religion, or sexual orientation” — endangers other fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution, such as freedom of religion.
Carefully read the following six sources, including the introductory information for each source. Write an essay that synthesizes material from at least three of the sources and develops your position on whether the right to free speech should continue to include hate speech.

Chapters 13-29 Literature Circle QuestionsChapter 17 - On New Year’s Day, Mother drives Tara to her new life in Utah. Tara’s apartment is a mile south of campus, and when she arrives, she finds that her two roommates have not yet returned from the Christmas holiday. Mother hugs Tara goodbye briskly and drops her off, leaving Tara alone. None of her roommates return for three days, and Tara is disturbed and quiet by the silence of the apartment compared to the constant hum of her childhood home, as well as the noises of the college town just beyond her windows. In what ways is Tara isolated in her new life?Chapter 19 - At the end of the semester, Tara returns to Buck’s Peak. She is awaiting the grades that will determine whether she will be able to return in the fall. Tara returns to her old job at Stokes, the grocery store, but Dad soon begins to insist that she come work for him at the scrap yard—he tells her that she isn’t “too good” for his kind of work.Chapter 23 - Back at school, Tara finds herself fielding offers from men at church to go out on dates. She rejects every single one, and her staunch opposition to dating and marriage attracts the attention of the church’s bishop. He calls Tara to a meeting, and tries to explain to her that “marriage is God’s plan.” How does handle this additional layer of pressure?Chapter 28 - Tara arrives at King’s College in England. On a tour of the campus chapel, Tara and her classmates go up onto the roof. Though the wind blows hard and strong, Dr. Kerry observes that Tara is “not afraid of falling”—she stands tall against the wind while all her other classmates hunch and cling to the walls. Dr. Kerry observes that it as if Tara has been up on this roof “all [her] life. Give examples of Tara facing her fears up to this point.

You Are Using Fallacies and You Don't Even Know It - Part 2 in Google Classroom

You Are Using Fallacies and You Don't Even Know It - Part 2

Why are Fallacies Dangerous? Fallacies are dangerous persuasive tools because they often sound so appealing. However, these poor logical arguments aim for cheap reasoning and complacent acquiescence. Don’t get fooled by these arguments. Instead, stay tuned to learn more about fallacies so you can avoid them when you try to persuade someone through debate in the future.
How do you avoid committing fallacies? Pretend you disagree with the conclusion you’re defending. What parts of the argument would now seem fishy to you? What parts would seem easiest to attack? Give special attention to strengthening those parts.
List your main points; under each one, list the evidence you have for it. Seeing your claims and evidence laid out this way may make you realize that you have no good evidence for a particular claim, or it may help you look more critically at the evidence you’re using.
Learn which types of fallacies you’re especially prone to, and be careful to check for them in your work. Some writers make lots of appeals to authority; others are more likely to rely on weak analogies or set up straw men. Read over some of your old papers to see if there’s a particular kind of fallacy you need to watch out for.
Be aware that broad claims need more proof than narrow ones. Claims that use sweeping words like “all,” “no,” “none,” “every,” “always,” “never,” “no one,” and “everyone” are sometimes appropriate—but they require a lot more proof than less-sweeping claims that use words like “some,” “many,” “few,” “sometimes,” “usually,” and so forth. Double check your characterizations of others, especially your opponents, to be sure they are accurate and fair.

CUTS IN MEDICARE

______

HON. PETER A. DeFAZIO

of oregon

in the house of representatives

Monday, July 28, 1997

Mr. DeFAZIO. Mr. Speaker, hundreds of my constituents have contacted
me about the severe cuts in Medicare reimbursement for home oxygen
therapy. As the House and Senate conferees deliberate over the extent
of these cuts, I would like them to consider the lives of seniors
receiving home oxygen services. The following letter was given to me by
Laurie Keiper of Springfield, OR.

To Congress and the Senate of the United States: I am an
oxygen home therapy patient on 3-4 liters, 24 hours each day.
I am a wife of a research vessel boatswain mate who is not
home every night. He is gone most of the summer and fall.
I am a care giver also, taking care of my grandson, most of
his 14 years. He will be starting 9th grade in the fall.
Without oxygen, I can not take care of my grandson, do for
my family, or take care of myself. Instead you will pay more
for child care, hospital and for nursing facility care. Most
likely my 5 years of life expectancy will be shortened to 2
to 3 years or less. Oxygen is 1 percent of the total medicare
budget. If you cut it by 40 percent what will it cost you?
40 percent increase in hospital stays.
40 percent increase in dependent payments, especially
without parental guidance look at all the options--drugs,
alcohol, runaways etc.
40 percent increase in home health and/or nursing facility
payments.
40 percent increase in death benefit burial payments.
It does not seem fiscally prudent to make this cut. Look
for fake bills, bad doctors, people who aren't supposed to be
on Medicare. When someone says they question a bill--follow
up on it. Cut cost that way!
Laurie Keiper.

Skill 1B Daily Video 2 in Google Classroom

Skill 1B Daily Video 2

Watch the video and take notes on how an author shows an understanding of an audience's beliefs, values, and or needs. Then, read the passage by Marian Evans Lewes. Finally, write a paragraph that shows an understanding of Lewes's fan's beliefs, values, and or needs. Support your claim with multiple pieces of evidence from the text.

Extra Help:
Read the passage by Marian Evans Lewes. Finally, write a paragraph that shows an understanding of Lewes's fan's beliefs, values, and or needs.

In “title”, author shows/demonstrates that she understands the values and needs of audience who (explain the situation). In the beginning of the text/letter, author rhetorical verb, “...”. (Explain). Later in the letter, she rhetorical verb, “...”. (Explain). Finally, author rhetorical verb, “...”. (Explain). Author conveys tones of ___ and ___ to (purpose).

Helpful rhetorical verbs
Remarks, reveals, explains, clarifies, asserts, inspires, empathizes, validates, defends, advocates, challenges, downplays, indicates, justifies, portrays, supports, reasons, understands, values, wants, needs

Example
In his "Letter from Birmingham Jail", the activist and religious leader Martin Luther King shows he understands the concerns of the eight clergymen who were attempting to call off the protests, but ultimately persuades them to accept his dedication to fighting for civil rights. At the beginning of the letter, he demonstrates his understanding of their moderate values by reminding them that they called his protest “untimely” and “unwise.” These words show patience tremendous patience when King must have felt both anger and frustration for their lack of support. Later in the letter, he reminds them that all his protests are “peaceful.” This creates a connection between himself and these clergymen, who all want their people to remain safe. In the closing, he suggests that they could make more progress if he had not been "thrown in jail." This would evoke a sense of anger at the lack of injustice. King's tone of patience with his audience contrast with the anger he expresses toward the unjust laws, which eventually helps to gain more support from the clergymen.

In a multiple-paragraph response, take a position on this question: What is the role that students play in their own education.

Process:
Brainstorm some ideas. Some questions to consider might be “how is our society different than ones without free public education, or from societies that approach it differently?” “What are the goals of education? How successful are we in meeting those goals?” “What are some of the benefits of education that we don’t necessarily plan to happen?” Then, draft your response. Don’t worry about shaping it into an essay, but you should attempt to have a clear claim about the value or function of education in the United States today.

The Founding Fathers risked their lives and the lives of their families to make a statement to the empire of Great Britain and the rest of the world. Guidelines for writing Declaration of Independence:
Preamble: Discuss the reasons for why you are writing this Declaration. (From, “When in the Course of (human) Events” to “declare the Causes which impel them to the Separation.”) What reasons do you believe you should declare your independence?

List of Complaints/Grievances: List the person/persons to whom you are addressing your complaints, and what you specifically are complaining about. (From, “To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid World….”) An example might be “Our Teachers have assigned an enormous amount of homework that we were forced to complete at times inconvenient.”
Statements of prior attempts to redress grievances: List the ways in which you have already tried to address your complaints. (From “Nor have We been wanting in attentions to our British brethren…”) In what ways have you already tried to address your complaints?
Declaration of Independence: Describe how you want things to change as a result of this Declaration. (From “We, therefore…”) How would you want things to change if you became independent?

If one of your greatest pleasures is spending your summer in long check-out lines to buy sweet corn and watermelon for your cookouts, then you definitely don’t need a vegetable garden.”

Three Things In Which Americans Believe in Google Classroom

Three Things In Which Americans Believe

Task:
Write a piece entitled “3 Things In Which Americans Believe”. In this piece, carefully examine the values, qualities, and or habits that seem to unite people who live in this country. You can be positive, negative, serious, or sarcastic.

Process:
After you choose 3 qualities, give a detailed explanation and vivid examples. The total of all 3 should be a minimum of 150 words. Include at least 1 complex sentence and highlight it.

Example:
It is clear that Americans believe in convenience. Ironically, we will work extremely hard to have an easy life. We blur the lines between wants and necessities because we can. Drive-Thru restaurants allow us to eat without cooking, cleaning, or even getting out of the car. Amazon allows us to shop without leaving the sofa. And services like Uber and Lyft take us anywhere without the stress of looking for parking. We count on so many services being available to us 24/7, and often take this for granted.
