Pioneer Horizons Director Wins HOT Positive Image Award

Pioneer High School Horizons Director Victoria Cuevas has received a Positive Image Award from the Hispanic Outreach Taskforce (HOT) for providing Whittier Union students with academic and social-emotional support to succeed in their classes, graduate from high school and compete in college and careers.
Cuevas was one of eight community leaders to be honored at the Positive Image Awards fundraiser on April 28. The annual event recognizes the exceptional contributions of individuals who enhance the quality of life within the Hispanic community.
“I am incredibly honored to receive this award and be recognized for what we all strive to do at Whittier Union, which is to prepare our kids – no matter their station or background – for success in college or careers,” Cuevas said. “I want to thank our Horizons and counseling team at Pioneer for supporting our students every step of the way and empowering them to plan their futures.”
Cuevas began her career at Whittier Union in 1985, when she began working as a comprehensive counselor at Pioneer High School. She now serves as the director of Pioneer’s Expanded Horizons office, which provides students with academic support as they embark on their future college and career paths.
Cuevas has helped cultivate a thriving culture of college readiness at Pioneer, guiding students through the college preparation process and providing access to resources. She coordinates college readiness activities such as overnight college tours, FAFSA workshops, as well as personal statement and application completion workshops.
“Vickie Cuevas’ dedication and passion to ensuring our students succeed is unmatched,” Superintendent Martin Plourde said. “She always makes herself available and has done an outstanding job of helping our students and their families understand the college entrance process to ensure a smooth transition from high school to collegiate life.”
